History
Sergeant, Company K, 339th Infantry, during the American intervention at Archangel, Russia. Resident of Holland, Mich.
Scope and Content Note
The originals are owned by the donor; the Bentley owns the digital version of the papers only. The donor digitized all of the papers, therefore, all file names and images appear as is. The files have been arranged by topic in this finding aid, but are listed alphabetically by file name on the CD-ROM. File types include .jpg, .tif, .bmp, and .dat. The image on the .tif file (hypthb07.tif) cannot be identified and the .dat file (hypthb07.dat) cannot be opened; both were originally included in the oral history transcript folder.
Papers include a copy of a 1978 oral history transcript of Levi Bartels, letters, discharge papers, and other papers related to his service in Russia. Visual materials include photographs and postcards of Russian scenes, photos of Bartels in uniform (1917-1919), and a group portrait of Company K, 339th Infantry. Also included are photographs of Bartels’ uniform, medals, and other accoutrements (2005) as well as four photograph pages from the publication, The History of the American Expedition Fighting the Bolsheviki: Campaigning in North Russia.
