Dear Parents,

I received your letter of Jan. 17 and was sorry to hear about Frank’s family dying of influenza. It is certainly too bad that the whole family is gone.26 The flu must be terrible around the neighborhood. It seem(s) to be affecting everyone around there. I hope Peter Burg and family have good luck and pull through safely.27

Well dear parents and all, as far as I went up to present, I have not been sick or ailing, only a little cold off and on. I am feeling fine and dandy.

The weather is rather cold and breezy. Lots of snow and more snow, day after day. All a fellow sees out here is snow, snow. I am use(d) to the weather now, out most of the time. When we retire for the night, all that we can do is crawl into a sleeping bag and off until awoke by a comrade.

(unfortunately, the remainder of this letter is missing)
